Last week was a blast!
We took a lovely route from Santa Fe to Gunnison, then did a detour through Grand Mesa–an incredible geological feature with stunning autumnal transitions (a highlight of the trip!)–then made our way to Utah.
The Utah Native Plant Society’s 2026 PlantFest was an incredible success! The Jobs Panel was well-attended on Friday afternoon. Saturday was a bit damp, but had a great time chatting at the booth about your trees, community science education and the newsletter drawing. The PLT activities session was a nice way to end the day.
Sunday’s PLT Educator Certification Workshop went well and we’re looking forward to continuing PLT trainings in partnership with Wasatch Mountain Institute across Utah.
We’ll be at the Outdoor Economic Conference on the 15th with a client and I’m co-leading a hands-on urban forestry workshop this Saturday:
Join the Santa Fe Watershed Association, Tree New Mexico and local experts Morgan Abbott, Arle Kruckeberg, and Michael Carr to learn about urban forestry management techniques, biodiversity, and plant identification in our arroyos.
This free workshop will be an opportunity for attendees to learn:
- How to confidently identify Siberian elm (Ulmus pumila)
- A variety of pruning techniques
- Different management methods across disciplines
What to bring:
- Old and/or comfortable work clothes
- Closed-toed shoes
- Hat, sunglasses, sunscreen
- Water bottle and snacks
If you have your own tools, such as loppers, shears, saws, and gloves, please bring them! A limited number of tools and gloves will also be available to borrow

Dr. Brady Self (Professor and Extension Forestry Coordinator – Mississippi State University) will discuss herbicide damage recognition, impacts, and ways to prevent it in forest settings.
Herbicides are a commonly used tool to manage unwanted vegetation across urban and forested landscapes. However, if used improperly or under the wrong conditions, damage can occur to non-target species causing a wide variety of symptoms including abnormal growth patterns, leaf discoloration, wilt, epicormic sprouting, and dieback. But what can be done about herbicide damage and how can it be best recognized or diagnosed? In this webinar, Dr. Brady Self will discuss herbicide damage in forest settings including its impacts and ways to prevent it.

Community forests are vital to our communities’ ecosystems by offering many benefits including providing shade and cooling temperatures, reducing stormwater runoff and flooding, removing pollutants from the air and water, enhancing residents’ overall health, and improving the quality of life in our communities. These benefits, however, can only be realized with healthy mature trees, which take decades for newly planted trees to reach when the conditions are right.
